There were many things wrong with the Monitor but big guns in an armored turret that pivoted was a natural progression. That alignment lasted until aircraft carriers made battleships obsolete.
Ironic how Monitors started as all big gun, all centerline turrets, only to have the concept regress for a half-century when scaled up to battleships.

The early dreadnaughts were susceptible to torpedo boats. Fast firing guns that could be depressed were a necessary protection.

Battleships never stopped having secondary armament which could handle such threats, and never stopped being vulnerable to such threats especially unescorted.
