"An inspirational true story"

So I was "observed" yesterday, meaning an outside consultant on special education services observed me and some of my colleagues.

I did a lesson on Uncle Tom's Cabin, part of the 1850s unit in US History I. Towards the end I somewhat overstated that the slave states tried to prevent Uncle Tom's Cabin from being read. Timidly a shy girl raised her hand. The boy next to her went "no, no!"

I said, "Steve! Let Chris speak! She is trying to contribute to class."

Chris mumbled something very quietly.

"Chris," I said, "speak up please."

Louder, "This reminds about how in Texas, today, you're only allowed to own six dildos."

Because the observer was diligently taking notes in the back, I felt I should report this to my supervisor. I told him the story.

He raised his eyebrows, "really?" Shaking his head he began to work on his laptop. "I've got to check this out."

"Not on the school laptop," I warned, but he ignored me.

"Shit, its true," he exclaimed.

"What do you do on Sunday?" asked one of my colleagues in the room.

To satisfy everyone's curiosity...

https://onwardtexas.org/trending/is-it-illegal-to-own-more-than-six-dildos-in-texas-yes-it-is/

The Texas Penal Code understands that an “Obscene device” means a device including a dildo or artificial vagina, designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs. So, because the law considers dildos obscene devices, and a person who owns more than six obscene devices is committing a criminal offense, therefore, owning 6 dildos (or plastic vaginas) is illegal.

The Texas obscenity statute is a statute prohibiting the sale of sex toys in Texas. The law was introduced in 1973, and was last updated in 2003. While the law was never formally repealed, in 2008 a U.S. District Judge released a report declaring it to be "facially unconstitutional and unenforceable.
