The White League was one of the largest and most dangerous of the Reconstruction Era militias. It embraced the worldview of the Ku Klux Klan, without the funny robes and hoods. In 1874 the League launched a campaign of terror against African Americans, culminating in a bloody coup attempt in New Orleans and the infamous "Battle of Liberty Place" led by Confederate veterans. This week I have an article in the scholarly Emerging Civil War on the League and its casualties.
