The engagement with Kiowa, Comanche, Arapahoe and Apache Indians at Adobe Fort, on the Canadian River, the New Mexico Territory, where, among other things, the Federals destroy their village, including 150 lodges, large amounts of dried meats, berries, buffalo robes, powder, etc.

Was Kit Carson commanding the troops, or was he rather a contracted government guide at the time?

I'll look into it.

it helps to read the links provided - from the first:
Col. Christopher (Kit) Carson, commanding the First Cavalry, New Mexico Volunteers, was ordered to lead an expedition against the winter campgrounds of the Comanches and Kiowas, believed to be somewhere on the south side of the Canadian.
