  • Maj. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith, CSA, is assigned to the command in East Tennessee.
  • Operations in Loudoun County, VA. (Feb 25-May 6)
  • First Legal Tender Act 1862 is passed by the US Congress, authorizing the United States Note (greenback) into circulation, the first paper money that was legal tender in America.
Wednesday February 25 1863
  • Maj. Gen. Daniel Harvey Hill, CSA, assumes the command of the Confederate troops in North Carolina.
  • Skirmish at Chantilly, VA.
  • Skirmish at Hartwood Church, VA, with Brig. Gen. Fitzhugh Lee's, CSA, Cavalry.
  • Cavalry skirmishes near Winchester, Strasburg, and Woodstock, VA. (Feb 25-26)
  • The USS Vanderbilt captures the British blockade runner, Peterhoff, off St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, which almost causes an international incident, eventually the Peterhoff is released.
Thursday February 25 1864
  • Affair near Hudsonville, MS, the Meridian, MS, Expedition.
  • Maj. Gen. Oliver 0. Howard, USA, resumes the command of the 11th US Army Corps, TN.
  • Federal scout from Whiteside's, TN, to Stevens' and Prick's Gaps, GA, where the Yankees gather all the meat and beef they could find. (Feb 25-26)
  • Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge, CSA, is assigned to the command of the Trans-Alleghany or the Western Dept. of Virginia, relieving from command, Maj. Gen. Samuel Jones, CSA.
Saturday February 25 1865
  • Brig. Gen. James Veatch, USA, assumes the command of the US forces on Dauphin Island, AL.
  • Maj. Gen. Frederick Steele, USA, is assigned to the command of the troops operating from Pensacola Bay, FL.
  • Skirmish at Piketon, KY.
  • The Union forces occupy Camden, SC, on the Wateree River.
  • Skirmish at West's Cross-Roads, SC.
  • Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, assumes the command of the Army of Tennessee and all troops in the Confederate Dept. of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Johnston notifies Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, that he believes a combination of his troops with Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA, in North Carolina is necessary to mount any kind of obstruction to the forces under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, USA.
  • Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger, USA, assumes the command of the 13th US Army Corps, TN.
  • 1870 - Hiram R. Revels takes his seat in the Senate from the state of Mississippi. Revels is black.
  • 1897 - Congress issues its final report on the Ford's Theater disaster.
