Many of the proposals now under study come from research groups that have spent years working to combat similar coronaviruses, particularly SARS and MERS. All that accumulated knowledge has allowed scientists to advance at unprecedented speed.

We know, for example, that the genome of the novel coronavirus, called SARS-CoV-2, is 79% like that of SARS. We know the “key” used by the virus to get into human lung cells is protein S and that the “lock” in the cell is the ACE2 receptor. We also know that the entry of the virus is facilitated by a protease, or an enzyme that breaks down proteins, from the cell itself, called TMPRSS211.

I guess the Baby Jesus was pissed off at the Rev. I lost Baby Jesus's cell phone number but it would be great if Baby Jesus could articulate his thoughts on CV19.

Dräger: There is little point in adapting unused production capacity to manufacture respiratory aids. I spoke with Daimler* over the weekend. They would also like to help. But it’s unfortunately not so simple. We can’t build cars either. Before we invest too much thought into this, we should focus on getting devices that are sitting around in a basement somewhere back into working order. Or can we repurpose other devices? There is a lot of potential there.

IIRC, it took at least a year and and half to "tool" up for full-production during WW II.

an m4 sherman is also a lot less complex than a respirator and a lot closer to what car manufacturers usually do. companies like dräger can get into higher gear because they can absorb rookies and train them on the job. daimler benz (or gm) does not have one single employee who doesn't need some sort of training themselves. when they are ready to go that thing is either over or we are all dead anyway.
