As we get ready to celebrate Juneteenth, the Boston Globe had two articles, one in the Sunday paper, and another in the Globe Magazine supplement, both arguing that the efforts of black people ended slavery. Anyone have any thoughts?

Interesting idea. Without reading them, but based on other readings of mine. The idea is that without passive resistance of slaves, slavery would have continued much longer. I find it obvious that if slaves loved their masters, there would have been no Civil War in the US or freeing of slaves anywhere. It was only resistance and pictures of beaten slaves or stories of barbaric treatment that the end of slavery came about.

I would also say that the Union Army had something to do with it.

What did the black people do to end slavery? I know they fought in the Union army. I know Douglas was their voice but what more did they do?

The Union Army containing 180,000 black soldiers.

Douglass's relentless advocacy(and not just him) for adopting abolition as a war aim, promoting the enlistment of blacks into the army. Blacks who 'voted with their feet' to leave slavery, from Shepard Mallory forward.

A bunch more provided logistical and intelligence services. Every slave that ran off either denied the CSA services and goods and/or diverted CSA resources to catch them. Then there were work slow-downs, sabotage and the like.

Sadly, I want to point out it was white men that free the slaves... Its that simple and yes , many black men of that period work towards their freedom...
