The day after the momentous Election of 1876, white Richmonders were tense over the slow returns coming from many hotly contested states. By the end of the day it became increasingly clear that Samuel J. Tilden had been elected president. Relief was followed by victory celebrations as Tilden's win signaled the restoration of white control of the South.
