Richmond's Robert E. Lee statue will come down on Wednesday, days after the Virginia Supreme Court ruled that the state could remove the 60-foot-tall monument.

Why it matters: The 130-year-old statue is "Virginia's largest monument to the Confederate insurrection," Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) said in a statement Monday. "This is an important step in showing who we are and what we value as a Commonwealth."

At least he was not buried under it. Still have mixed feelings on this but it really is time for the past to be the past.

With all the monuments removed someone could set up a nice interpretive garden somewhere.
As many as there are, more than one garden may be needed! Think of how well off the South would have been if these folks had invested in it instead of in raising up gods. Lee and Forrest in particular are the most popular of the Confederates...but neither would have wanted to be set on a pedestal anywhere. When Custis Lee scolded his father for accidentally becoming the president of a financially failing railroad, Lee replied, "You are right. I suppose I have led enough lost causes!"

Not uncoincidentally, the equestrian statue of Lee is exactly the same height as the Forrest equestrian statue. The pedestal of Forrest's was half that of Robert E Lee's, whose monument went up one year before. In the eyes of those who erected these monuments, Lee was the first and foremost hero of the Confederacy, and Forrest was the second hero.

Fun Fact: other than the 65-ft Christ of the Ozarks (built 1966), this 60-ft Lee monument was substantially taller than any statue of Jesus in the United States.

However, unlike Lee, Christ of the Ozarks didn't need to be placed on a literal pedestal.
