I've been flogging this point of view since forever.

Local communities should have control over their own public spaces. They should have hearings, and city council meetings and make their decisions. If the members of the community want to retain their monuments, move their monuments, "contextialize" (is that a word?) their monuments with signs, or remove their monuments, its their decision. The local government is answerable to the local residents.

The alternative is the state government forces communities to maintain monuments they don't want.

In Virginia, some towns and cities will retain their monuments, some will remove them, or some action in between. The rule of law and orderly governmental processes will be followed. It will be boring and everyone won't get their way. Welcome to democracy.
