One hazard of writing about the Civil War is encountering people who insist that REAL NAME of the conflict is "The War of Northern Aggression." No it isn't. The Civil War had a lot of alternative names in the first eight decades after it ended, but "The War of Northern Aggression" was not one of them. It only became popular in the South after the Supreme Court issued its desegregation order in 1954.

Thanks, Pat! It's good to sort out the original terms from newer ones in order to be accurate about the thinking of the people then. There was a lot of pro-Confederate sentiment in the 50s, just before the Civil Rights Movement kicked into high gear, and many terms began there...not in 1865! But it was a way to get the famous and highly respected ancestor on your side. Forrest's granddaughter invoked him to support her stand for segregation. Her grandpa never supported segregation!

From @PatYoung article: “The Slaveholders’ War.” This was a somewhat popular name for the war until the 1890s, when Blacks were increasingly written out of histories of the period.

I think "The Slaveholders' War" or "the Slaveholders' Rebellion" should become the official name of the war... It would put an end the silly argument the war "was not about slavery"... The war was about slavery so it should be in the title of the war... someone call their congressman and lets get it done...
