A little more... It appears that the Confederate army was supplied with clothing... Kepi

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond_Depot

The Richmond Depot, or the Richmond Clothing Bureau, was a clothing and equipment facility located in three primary facilities, in and around Richmond, Virginia, established late in 1861, that supplied uniforms, footwear, and other equipment to the Confederate States Army, primarily the Army of Northern Virginia, and the surrounding region of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Richmond Depot uniforms were not issued to western or Deep South Confederates, such as the Army of Tennessee.

There is some sort of story that Gettysburg Battle was over foot ware. Well at least CSA General JEB Stuart thought so. Some records suggest he was the first to Gettysburg looking for foot ware. They say the Confederate Supply Officer in charge of foot ware was CSA Col Abraham C Myers.

@jgoodguy .... What do you think ...

The Confederate congress abolished the commutation system on October 8, 1862; thereby, making the Confederate quartermaster department solely responsible for clothing Confederate troops. By that time, the quartermaster depots were fully operational, so this posed no problem

Got a lot of references and notes. Passes the sniff test. I looked at a few of the references and they seem valid.

Chief Confederate Quartermaster was Col Abraham C Myers from Lee County Florida although records say the Myers family of Florida were really from Charleston SC with family at Gettysburg PA.

The city of Fort Myers is named for him. The fort was built there was General Twiggs named for him because he was dating his daughter...

Hello! Welcome to the board. Would you perhaps be related to Col Myers?

I hadn't paid much attention to clothing on either side during the CW, but it was indeed a major issue. Cavalry in particular was hard on clothes, from Buford not being able to find a clean enough shirt to use for a truce flag to Forrest's lieutenant complaining about wearing out the seat of his pants - undignified for an officer's unders to be showing! Leatherbritches Dilger had the right idea there.

I don't think Gettysburg was started over Heth looking for footware - I think he was looking for trouble and found it! Running into John Buford and then the Iron Brigade is a heck of a start for your day. Don't think he was looking for that much trouble!

I have to add that the sewing machine won the clothing war for the Union. Sewing was industrialized in the Union while the poor Rebel women wore out eyes and fingers sewing for the Confederacy. With the blockade and shortages for cloth, thread and needles, the CSA army was in tatters.

I like how Col. Myers moved to Germany after the war...

.

At the end of the Civil War he took his family to Weisbaden, Germany. The family returned to this country in 1876. Fort Myers, city seat of Lee County, southwestern Florida is named for him. He was the quartermaster for the fort in the Indian wars during the mid-1800s

Colonel Myers eventually administered the largest Confederate supply bureau, with 88 clerks, quartermasters in each state, paymasters and quartermasters in the field, manufacturing plants, special units such as the Tax-in-Kind Office, purchasing agents abroad, and depot and post quartermasters. On August 7, 1863, Confederate President Jefferson Davis dismissed Myers and replaced him with Alexander R. Lawton. Myers was humiliated by the termination and remained bitter for the rest of his life.

That's why Sherman said a bunch of farmers can't win against a bunch of mechanics. Lee's wife organized a lot of women for just knitting socks - that would be one tedious job even if you had company. Forrest solved the clothing problem for his troops - he just stole Union clothes. (In fact, he stole so much of it he had to issue orders to his men to get their blue outfits dyed grey pronto before other CSA troops mistook them for the enemy!)

After battle looting of Union camps sustained the Army of Northern Virginia until Grant just did not retreat.

When Lee and his staff were sitting around talking about the latest change in generals Lincoln made, Lee said don't laugh too loud because pretty soon he'd fool around and find a guy who could beat him! He did.

@LJMYERS ... Story...

Hi

Since we are doing Find a grave. He saved the life of General John T Myers. He is buried in the Lewis and Clark lot in Pittsburgh. This story does go back that far as just about everyone on the boat was from Virginia and Confederate. The Capital of Pittsburgh was Richmond VA.

Link below...

It says there's no articles associated when I clicked on it. Any way to see it?

I had to repost the link...

Yes and I have most
Here is a good link about Col. Myers last days of the war in Charleston, SC.... Before he took the family to Europe...

.

A side note...

The fort itself was disassembled, and some of the wood used in construction of some of the first buildings in what would become downtown Fort Myers. No more than ten families lived in the original town when it was platted in 1876.
