Dan Sickles didn't like the ground his 3rd corps was given to defend at the southern end of Cemetery Ridge. Looking around, he spotted what he thought was more defensible ground about 1/2 mile forward of his assigned position. On his own initiative, without consulting General Meade, Sickles ordered his men to move to this new position. The westernmost, and thus most exposed, spot in this new position was in a peach orchard belonging to the Reverend Joseph Sherfy. It wouldn't take long, once the fighting started, to demonstrate the weakness of this new position.
