June 28, 1863 - Colonel James Hardie travels to AoP headquarters and passes on Lincoln's and Halleck's order that George Meade assume command of the Army of the Potomac immediately, replacing Joe Hooker.

Be careful what you ask for! I've always figured Joe Hooker didn't think he'd really be relieved just because he asked for it. He expected at least a little courting! Meade, on the other hand, was not at all expecting that - he didn't know what was mentioned in the article about Reynolds. It's one of those threads of fate one wonders about. Reynolds, instead of commanding the AoP at Gettysburg, commanded the 11th and the 1st, and died giving Meade an edge he very much needed.

Not sure who " Jow Hooker" is. I have read many accounts of a Joseph Hooker who was a general and one time Commander of the AoP. Tell us more about " Jow Hooker" .

He's Joe Hooker's alter ego.

Jow's the guy Joe lost confidence in - Joe never lost confidence in Joe! He didn't seem to be himself after that conk on the head at Chancellorsville. It seemed to me it took some of the starch out of him but a TBI would do that. Definitely should have handed off command then and there to Couch or someone else. I suspect that if Jackson had not been shot, Hooker would have been handed his rear on a platter - then he would not have even been transferred west! The critical thing is Lee thought he was going to be fighting Hooker, and sent Stuart off with orders he could widely interpret. Lee had Hooker's measure and knew he could win. He was totally blindsided when elements of the AoP started popping up - Meade got the lead out like no other general they'd had.

As it turned out, Hooker did better under Grant than he did on his own.
