The day after the unbelievably close Election of 1876, Republican nominee Rutherford B. Hayes was urged by his supporters to publicly claim victory even though the final vote tallies were missing. Instead he urged reporters to refrain from announcing a winner. BONUS: Ten days after the voting, Cartoonist Thomas Nast's drawing showed him trying to "Keep Cool" while waiting for the vote counts to be finalized.
