This is interesting - I have heard of another soldier in an Ohio regiment who was also reckoned a giant at 6'7". I have no idea what his name was or how to find out about him. The height of the average guy in those days was about 5'6". The build was different than today - the way the troops moved showed a lot of real endurance rather than strength. A short, stocky guy was going to do better than a tall, lanky fellow. (Gen Forrest always being the exception that proves the rule - at 6'2" he was considered a giant as well.)

Speaking of height, George Washington's height is usually 6'3", but it was actually 6'5" - lost a couple inches from arthritis! Thomas Jefferson was also quite tall, Benjamin Franklin was over 6' - very athletic. (We always see him as an old man!) They were all descended from people in the British Isles, who were very seldom anywhere near that tall.
