These are amazing pictures. It's something that needs to be seen, too. Often these jails were right next door to the slave dealer's family home, or in back of a church, right downtown like any other business.

Banality of evil
In Memphis they had an historical marker where Forrest's home and slave jail stood - long since torn down - both of which were behind a still standing church. It was nice and noted Forrest was a prominent businessman in Memphis...but didn't note his business. That's been replaced with an accurate one stating he was a slave trader, which is very good. In fact, Forrest wouldn't have minded at all - he never apologized for it and his 'merchandise' would have been astounded if he had. It's an incomprehensible mindset for certain.
