1850 - Senator James Pearce's plan to compensate Texas for ceding territory is accepted, making it a fundamental piece of the Compromise of 1850.
1850 - California is admitted to the United States. For the first time the number of free states (16) exceeds the number of slave states (15).

  • William Rufus Terrill, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
  • The CSS Alabama continues its hunt for Union vessels, burning the Alert, Ocean Rover, Starlight, and the Weather Gauge, during the last 3 days, near the Azores, eastern Atlantic Ocean.
  • Skirmishes on the Franklin and Scottsville Roads, KY.
  • Skirmishes at Monocacy Church and Barnesville, MD, as Gen. Robert E. Lee, CSA, presses on into Maryland.
  • Skirmish at Big Creek, MO.
  • Skirmish at Cockrum Cross-Roads, MS.
  • Skirmish at Rienzi, MS.
  • Skirmish at Columbia, TN.
  • Skirmish at Williamsburg, VA, with Federals under Maj. Gen. John A Dix, USA, Dept. of VA, being routed by Rebels; Maj. Jacob P. Wilson, 5th PA Cavalry, after being brought in front of a Court of Court- Martial for cowardice, is found not guilty, and restored to previous rank.

  • Chattanooga, TN, is occupied by Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans, USA, as Gen. Braxton Bragg, CSA, retreats toward Lafayette, GA.
  • Skirmish at Webber's Falls, the Indian Territory.
  • Skirmish at Friar's Island, TN, the Chickamauga Campaign.
  • The 1st Confederate Army Corps under Lieut. Gen. James Longstreet is detached from the Army of Northern Virginia, and ordered to Tennessee, to assist Gen. Braxton Bragg, arriving Sep 18-19, having to travel by rail, through North Carolina and to Atlanta, GA, to reach Bragg's army.

  • The Confederate rifle attack on the Federal steamer, J.D. Perry, just below Clarendon, AR, with little damage done.
  • Federal scout of the 60th US Colored Infantry, from Helena to Alligator Bayou, AR. (Sep 9-14)
  • Federal scout from Lewisburg to Norristown and Russellville, AR, with skirmishes with guerrillas. (Sep 9-12)
  • Federal expedition from Pine Bluff toward Monticello, AR, with skirmishes near:
    • Monticello (Sep 10) and
    • at Brewer's Lane (Sep 11).

  • Federal expedition from Fort Pike, LA, aboard the steamer, J.D. Swain, up the Pearl River, to Deer Island Landing. (Sep 9-12)
  • Affair on the Warrensburg road, near Warrensburg, MO, as the Federals happen upon 4 guerrillas robbing the Warrensburg mail. The guerrillas escape, although one May be wounded.
  • The Confederate capture and burning of the mail steamer, Fawn, and skirmish at Currituck Bridge, VA. The Federals find the body of a man belonging to the 23rd MA Volunteers, another seriously wounded, and the burned out shell of the vessel; the rest of the command missing, captured by the Rebels. The Federals quickly move to reopen this route.
