I think this summer of 1919 is astonishing for it victimization of Black American. They lynch black men still wearing their military uninforms.

snip... white kids stoning a black kid, wtf!

On July 27, 1919, an African American teenager drowned in Lake Michigan after violating the unofficial segregation of Chicago’s beaches and being stoned by a group of white youths. His death, and the police’s refusal to arrest the white man whom eyewitnesses identified as causing it, sparked a week of rioting between gangs of Black and white Chicagoans, concentrated on the South Side neighborhood surrounding the stockyards. When the riots ended on August 3, 15 white and 23 Black people had been killed and more than 500 people injured; an additional 1,000 Black families had lost their homes when they were torched by rioters.

It was just the start: "In coming months, similar horrors would afflict cities and towns across America. The violence that April Sunday was only the beginning of what would become known as the Red Summer of 1919, when riots and lynchings spread throughout the country, causing havoc and harming thousands — yet also awakening millions of blacks to fight for rights guaranteed them, but so long denied."

Ward said that white people were responding to the "ever-present white fear of a loss of social status and dominance" and were "resentful of this disruption of social, economic and political order."

From April to November, some 30 riots broke out across the eastern U.S., with hundreds of accounts of beatings, lynchings and the burning of churches and buildings. As a result of the violence, the Ku Klux Klan also saw a resurgence

Here is the military angle on the Red Summer... the link also list the men lynched in their uniforms...

During a homecoming celebration for African-American veterans of World War I in Norfolk, Virginia a race riot broke out on July 21, 1919. At least two people were killed and three others were injured. City officials had to call in the Marines and Navy personnel to restore order.

On August 16, 1917, Senator James K. Vardaman of Mississippi spoke of his fear of black veterans returning to the South, as he viewed that it would "inevitably lead to disaster."[2] To the American South, the use of black soldiers in the military was a threat, not a virtue. "Impress the negro with the fact that he is defending the flag, inflate his untutored soul with military airs, teach him that it is his duty to keep the emblem of the Nation flying triumphantly in the air," and, the senator cautioned, "it is but a short step to the conclusion that his political rights must be respected."[2]

Many black soldiers in the years after the war were threatened with violence if they were caught wearing their uniform.[2] Many others were even physically attacked, sometimes barely escaping with their lives

Here is a story...

Clinton Briggs, a 26 year old WWI veteran, was walking down the street in Arkansas when a white woman brushed up against him.

The woman stated he wasn’t allowed to walk on the sidewalk, he replied “This is a free man’s country.”

Within hours, Briggs was dragged outside of town by a group of white men who chained him to a tree with car chains. The men shot Briggs several times and his body was found days later by a farmer.

Learn more about the story of Clinton Briggs in the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History and Culture. There it notes,

According to historian Nan Elizabeth Woodruff, like many African-American soldiers who returned to the South following World War I, Briggs found that his service to his country was a threat to the traditional, segregated southern way of life. He became a target of local whites, who wanted him to return to his former subordinate position.

Here is a link to more of Briggs death there is three accounts of what happen by any account he was murdered...
