Would it not be far more accurate to say that Southern whites were violently opposed to Civil Rights for blacks and efforts to disenfranchise AA's continue in the American South to this day.IMHO i believe Parson Brownlow extreme treatment of ex confederates was a major cause to the start of Jim Crow..

It is mentioned in a couple of Eric Foner's books on Reconstruction...I think he now has written 14 on the subject.BUT... he did not allow them to shoot.
