Gordon Reed is best known for her books on Monticello: Sally Hemming and Thomas Jefferson: An American Controversy and the book she won the Pulitzer Prize: The Hemmings of Monticello: An American Family

In this short book, she writes a thoughtful memoir of growing up in east Texas, her memories of her family, celebrations of Juneteenth, of being the first Black child to attend the "white" school after desegregation, of balancing the love and affection, strengthened by memories of family and friends with a clearer eyed understanding of history. Well worth reading.

This Color Troop was in Galveston on June 19th, 1865... wiki page ignores this fact...

These men were part of the force present on June 19, 1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation was announced to the enslaved people in Galveston. These men must have seemed to be superheroes to formerly enslaved children who saw them arrive under arms bearing the brass letters of “US” upon their equipment and clothing.
