October 29, 1824 - Joseph Horace Lewis, American Brigadier General (Confederate Army), born in Barren County, Kentucky (d. 1904)

October 29, 1861 - Hugh Weedon Mercer, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

October 29, 1861 - Skirmishes at and near Woodbury, and Morgantown, KY, with Kentucky Volunteers against Mississippi Cavalry.

October 29, 1861 - Brig. Gen. Thomas West Sherman's and Flag Officer Samuel Francis DuPont's expedition to capture Port Royal, SC, sails from Hampton Roads, VA, with a total of 77 ships. They run into severe weather at sea, and if successful in their attempt to capture the town, would use it as a refueling depot for the Atlantic blockading fleet.

October 29, 1862 - Alfred Cumming, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

October 29, 1862 - The capture of Confederate pickets opposite Williamsport, MD.

October 29, 1862 - Skirmish at Island Mound, MO.

October 29, 1862 - Affair at Sabine Pass, TX.

October 29, 1862 - Skirmish on the Blackwater, VA.

October 29, 1862 - Skirmish near Upperville, VA.

October29, 1862 - Skirmish near Petersburg, WV, as the Federals overtake and recapture 200 head of cattle taken by JEB Stuart's Cavalry.

October 29, 1863 - First supplies along the Cracker Line reach Chattanooga.

October 29, 1863 - Jefferson Davis grants Nathan Bedford Forrest's request for an independent command in north Mississippi and west Tennessee. This frees him from Braxton Bragg.

October 29, 1863 - Edward Higgins, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

October 29, 1863 - President Jefferson Davis continues with his trip through the deep south, visiting Atlanta, GA.

October 29, 1863 - Skirmish at Cherokee Station, AL, on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad.

October 29, 1863 - Skirmish at Ozark, MO.

October 29, 1863 - Federal scout from Pilot Knob to Alton and Doniphan, MO, with the killing and capture of guerrillas. (Oct 29-Nov 5)

October 29, 1863 - Affair near Warsaw, MO.

October 29, 1863 - Skirmish at Centreville, TN, as Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas' USA, Cavalry attack and rout of the Confederates, killing, wounding and capturing close to 90 Rebels.

October 29, 1863 - Federal scout from Winchester to Fayetteville, TN, by way of Lynchburg, with skirmish. The Union men bring back beef cattle, horses and mules. (Oct 29-Nov 2)

October 29, 1864 - Maj. Gen. Thomas Edward Greenfield Ransom, USA, dies from complications developed from battle wounds received during his career, near Rome, GA.

October 29, 1864 - The capture of the Union steamer, Mazeppa, by Maj. Gen. Nathan B. Forrest, CSA, near Forts Henry and Heiman, Tennessee River, KY.

October 29, 1864 - The Confederate attack on Vanceburg, KY, is repulsed by the loyal citizens of the town, the rebels fleeing toward Fox Creek, Fleming County.

October 29, 1864 - The Federal expedition to Quincy, MO, with skirmishes (Nov 1 & 2) near Quincy. (Oct 29-Nov 8)
