Snake Creek Gap.

Snake Creek Gap. In the fall of 1864 Sherman was drawn northward by Hood's movements. Upon reaching Snake Creek Gap October 15th, he was there delayed for several hours by the skirmishing with the Confederate rear guard.

Report of Brig. Gen. Jeremiah C. Sullivan, U. S. Army.
HARPER'S FERRY,

October 15, 1863.

SIR: This morning a portion of Colonel Pierce's command met a squad of 37 men, belonging to Gilmor's battalion, who intended burning Back Creek Bridge. They captured the whole party without the loss of a man. I think I can make the cavalry of this command effective.
