The Shepherds owned most of Martinsburg
Shepherdstown Founder: Thomas Shepherd founded the nearby town of Shepherdstown (originally named Mecklenburg) in 1762, retaining significant responsibility for its government as the sole trustee. Shepherd University, located in the town, is named for the family.
  • Land Donation for Airfield: The Shepherd family later offered a large piece of real estate south of Martinsburg without charge in the early 1920s to be used as an airfield, which became known as Shepherd Field (now the Eastern WV Regional Airport).

Shepherds. They own a art store in Shepherdstown.

You're likely thinking of Shepherds Blessings, LLC, owned by Betty and Steve Shepherd in Shepherdstown, WV, a shop selling handmade soaps, teas, coffee, crafts, and some art by family/locals at 121 W. German Street. While not strictly an art gallery, they feature paintings and handcrafted items, fitting the description of a local business with artistic goods in Shepherdstown, notes the Shepherdstown Chronicle.

We had dinner at the Mexican restaurant. Before that, I visited the James Rumsey Museum and talked to someone named Unger from Unger Station. I explained I talked to experts several years ago and they did not like the idea my family was connected to Robert Fulton. Although it's really Riverboat Captain James Rees and Sons via my dad's mother. My life goes from Shepherdstown to Middleburg and everything in between

Yes the John Denver section of West Virginia where houses are 1/4 priced. Then how about Captain James Rees and Sons? They even built a boat for Ben Cartwright.

The Families of Riverboat Builders of Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh was a steamboat building hub, and while many families contributed, prominent names included the Howard family (Howard Shipyards) near Louisville, KY, known for massive steamboat hull production, and families involved with riverboat building in the broader Ohio/Mississippi system, like the Creef family in NC, focused on speed, showcasing how families built the fleet for the booming American West, revolutionizing trade and travel on the Three Rivers.
Key Families & Figures

  • Howard Family (Howard Shipyards): Though located in Indiana, this family built roughly a third of all inland river steamboat hulls, with James Howard starting the yard in 1834, a massive force in the steamboat era.
  • Creef Family (Eastern NC): Known for designing faster, not just utilitarian, boats, with a marine railway and innovations that spread across the East Coast.
  • Robert Fulton: While not a Pittsburgh family builder, he launched the first successful steamboat on Western waters (the New Orleans) from Pittsburgh in 1811, kickstarting the industry there.
Pittsburgh's Role
  • Steamboat Capital: In the 1850s, the Monongahela Wharf was packed with steamboats, making Pittsburgh a world leader in building vessels for the Ohio, Mississippi, and beyond.
  • Revolutionized the West: Steamboats allowed for two-way travel on the great rivers, opening up the American West for commerce and settlement.
Finding More Information
To research specific Pittsburgh families, search for names associated with local shipyards, look into the history of the Monongahela River boatyards, and check local historical societies or resources like the Howard Steamboat Museum.

Robert Fulton's mother lived in Pittsburgh.

The statement is correct; Robert Fulton's mother, Mary Fulton, lived on a farm near Pittsburgh, in Hopewell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, that her son purchased for her in 1785. She lived there, receiving financial support from him, until her death in 1799.

That is what they say. OSS Officer Adolph Schmidt married to Helen Mellon and my uncle Col Ed Murphy were assigned to Eqypt at the time of Rommel.
