We were talking about the London Blitz and I was sharing some photos of the destruction. In one, a milkman cheerfully makes his rounds, picking his way through the wreckage. "Who picks this up?" a student asked, indicating the ruined buildings and rubble strew streets. "Who fixes this"?

In my World War II elective, I was giving notes on the Aktion Reinhard Camps, (Treblinka, etc.). One of the students says, "Don't they have any heart, just a little bit? Where do they find them?(meaning the SS and Trawnikis men)"

I once did some research on that. Where do these bloody tyrants get their henchmen? Aside from the psychos and true believers, it's the nice guy next door. Once people get past their conscience and know there are no consequences to their actions, it's incredible how low they go. Thankfully not all will go there but enough do.

There has been a study or more that says that US citizens could replicate death camps under the right circumstances.

In Christopher Browning's Ordinary Men, he studies an Order Police unit, Battalion 101 and how these "ordinary men" ended up committed mass murder. He concludes with, if this group of "ordinary men" were capable of war crimes, what group of "ordiinar men" is not capable?

IMO, its when we label human beings, that we can commit atrocities on them. Because they have a different label then us, so they are not us.

The great paradox of modern humanity is that we simultaneously try to celebrate our diversity while insisting we're not really that different.

And "diversity" is usually based on the simplest attributes - particularly race and gender.
