I watched this week and it was really good. I must say those raiders in the prison were brutal to their own men of the federal Army and it disgusted me how they behaved if that's what really happened. I do have some questions about the historical part, one did those raiders in the camp exist and do those terrible things and did they really have a trial ? 2 When the Confederate Captian of that camp requested a recomendation for Major from the Colonel did he get that rank up ? 3 it says at the end the prisoners were never really exchanged and moved to other prisons is that true ? and did the Confederates really offer them a place in their Army ?

Ok, so where they that brutal like the ones in the movie ?
I forget his name but one soldier who helped as a nurse at Andersonville kept a very explicit diary of what occurred there.i picked his book up at the Andersonville gift shop and it is well worth reading.

I think Wirz did get that promotion to major but it was a little late. It was meant to keep him from being hung for Andersonville - over a certain rank they could not do that.

You're right...the Raiders were rotten to the core. Sometimes a place like that will bring out the very worst in humanity.

My wife is anything but a Civil War junkie like the rest of us but of all the sites I have taken her over the years she said Andersonville really got to her.it is really a must see place to visit.

John Winder might have been twisting in the wind beside Wirz but he had the courtesy to croak beforehand. Between him and Northrup, the Andersonville prisoners had no chance. Wirz was between a rock and a hard place - think he actually tried to do something right. The situation was not manageable. Northrup didn't do Confederate soldiers any good, either!

Wirz was fighting a losing battle from the start.he couldn't win no matter what he did.

Oh so that's why he asked the Colonel for the recomendation not because he would have more people to improve things at the prison or was it partially both ? I'm glad those raiders got hanged it just really shocked me how brutal men in blue or green for that matter could do that to each other. So Major and up you can't get hanged ?

I think Wirz did want the extra help and the extra authority - he wanted to do something about conditions there. But officers had an amnesty - major was the cut-off. Unfortunately for Wirz, his promotion was not deemed legal as Richmond fell while it was being processed.

I see, I'm sure he had no problem having that Major star sowed on anyway despite his promotion nor being fully processed.
