  • Lieut. Gen. Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson, CSA, is mortally wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA, by a volley from his own men who had mistaken his envoy as Federal cavalry during Jackson's evening reconnaissance, requiring amputation of his left arm.

  • Bvt. Brig. Gen. John E. Smith, USA, is assigned to the command the District of West Tennessee, vice Maj. Gen. Stephen Gano Burbridge, USA, is relieved of command.
  • President Jefferson Davis and his entourage arrive at Abbeville, SC, headed for Washington, GA. President Andrew Johnston puts a $100,000 reward out for the capture of Davis. The Confederate navy turns over their cargo of bullion and archives to Davis' escort commander, Brig. Gen. Basil Duke, and disbands. Confederate Secretary of the Navy, Stephen R. Mallory, officially resigns and leaves for La Grange, GA.

1898 - Charles C. Walcutt, American general in the Union Army during the American Civil War, dies of an old war wound at 60 in Omaha, Nebraska.
