March 24, 1834 - John Wesley Powell, Union Civil War veteran, geologist/explorer/ethnologist born in Mount Morris, NY.

March 24, 1856 - President Franklin Pierce sends all "...documents touching the affairs of the Territory of Kansas" between the dates of January 1, 1855 and June 30, 1855 to the House of Representatives to comply with an earlier request.

March 24, 1862 - Albert Sidney Johnston's Army arrives at Corinth, Mississippi from Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

March 24, 1862 - Mahlon Dickerson Manson, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

March 24, 1862 - Federal scout in Saint Clair and Henry Counties, MO.

March 24, 1864 - The 3rd US Army Corps is discontinued, and the troops are distributed to the 2nd and the 6th US Army Corps, the Army of the Potomac, VA.

March 24, 1865 - Federal scout in search of Confederates, through the swamps, from Bayou Boeuf to Bayou Chemise, LA.

March 24, 1865 - Affair about 7 miles west of Rolla, MO, on the Springfield Road, where guerrillas dressed in Union garb surprise and capture a band of Yankees taking a breather along the road. The Union officers are attacked in the nearby house they went into to get a drink of water, firing through the window and killing a mounted guerrilla; the rest take off with their Yankee prisoners.

March 24, 1865 - Skirmish near Moccasin Creek, NC.

March 24, 1865 - The CSS Stonewall embarks from the port of Ferrol, Spain, as the two wooden US frigates, USS Niagara and USS Sacramento fail to challenge her. The commanding Union Naval officer, Commodore T. T. Craven will later be court martialed for his lack of action.

March 24, 1868 - Following the ratification of the 14th Amendment, the New Jersey legislature voted through a resolution of rescission. Governor Marcus L. Ward then vetoed the rescission. On this date, New Jersey readopted the rescission over the governor's veto.
