Frank Smith, a New Deal Democrat from Mississippi, wrote a book in 1965 titled Look Away From Dixie.

In the words of another historian: "Smith's greatest desire was to see the South escape the bondage of a pathological past. . . . In his view, the South's cultural distinctiveness was merely toxic heritage of past misfortune."

Has anyone read this book?

I took a look at it, briefly.

The theme I saw was in essence that Southern politicians used racism to get elected then do what they wanted to do. Not much different in some parts of the South today, but IMHO this will be the last generation that it applies to.
