Frank Smith, a New Deal Democrat from Mississippi, wrote a book in 1965 titled Look Away From Dixie.
In the words of another historian: "Smith's greatest desire was to see the South escape the bondage of a pathological past. . . . In his view, the South's cultural distinctiveness was merely toxic heritage of past misfortune."
Has anyone read this book?
