  • Robert Edward Lee. C.S.A.. is appointed Full Confederate General.
  • Stephen Augustus Hurlbut, USA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
  • Federal expedition near Seneca Mills, MD, under Brig. Gen. Charles P. Stone, USA, with skirmish.
  • Harper's Ferry, WV, is evacuated by Brig. Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, CSA, after receiving word of the arrival of Federal troops from the west under Maj. Gen. George Brinton McClellan, and from the north under Gen. Robert Patterson; Johnston withdrawing to the vicinity of Winchester, VA.

  • Lieut. Gen. Leonidas Polk, CSA, is mortally wounded at Pine Mountain, near Marietta, GA, during the opening of the Atlanta, GA, Campaign, killed instantly by a Federal Artillery shell through his chest, while he sat upon his horse examining the Federal position with Confederate Lieut. Gens. Joseph E. Johnston and William Joseph Hardee.
  • Hylan Benton Lyon, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
  • The USS Kearsarge lies in wait for the CSS Alabama, off the port of Cherbourg, France.
  • Skirmish near Lexington, MO, where the guerrillas attack the Yankees.

  • Action with Indians at Horse Creek, the Dakota Territory, where approximately 2,000 Sioux attack and kill 4 Yankees, wounding 4 others. The Federals circle the wagons but the Indians withdraw.
  • Col. Carroll H. Potter, 6th US Volunteer Infantry, assumes the command of the South Sub-District of the Plains, Dakota.
  • 1876 - The three-day Republican Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio (Hayes home state) shifted its support from front runner James Blaine to Rutherford B. Hayes on the second ballot.
