July 25, 1822 - Schuyler Hamilton, American Major General (Union Army), born in Putnam County, New York (d. 1903)

July 25, 1824 - Richard James Oglesby, American politician and Major General (Union Army), born in Oldham County, Kentucky (d. 1899)

July 25, 1861 - With his troops enlistment expiring, Robert Patterson is relieved of duty in the Shenandoah Valley and replaced by Nathaniel P. Banks. Patterson had failed to hold Joseph Johnston in Winchester to prevent him from moving east to reinforce Beauregard at Bull Run.

July 25, 1861 - The U. S. Congress approves the use of volunteers to put down the rebellion

July 25, 1861 - The Crittenden-Johnson Resolution passes in Congress. This states the Preservation of the Union, not abolition, is the reason for the Civil War. This was done to keep the border states in the Union.

July 25, 1861 - Maj. Gen. John C. Fremont, USA, assumes the command of the Western Dept., at St. Louis, MO.

July 25, 1861 - Skirmish at Dug Springs, MO.

July 25, 1861 - Skirmishes at Harrisonville, MO. (Jul 25-27)

July 25, 1861 - Skirmish at Mesilla, the New Mexico Territory, with Federal troops from Fort Fillmore, under Maj. Isaac Lynde, USA, who stave off the Confederates.

July 25, 1861 - Maj. Gen. John Adams Dix, USA, assumes the command of the Dept. of Pennsylvania.

July 25, 1861 - Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter replaces Robert Toombs as the Confederate Secretary of State, Toombs resigning for a military appointment.

July 25, 1862 - James Ewell Brown," JEB," Stuart, C.S.A., is appointed a Major General of the Confederacy.

July 25, 1862 - Harry Thompson Hays, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.

July 25, 1862 - Skirmish at Courtland, or Courtland Bridge, AL, with a Confederate rout of forces under Maj. Gen. Don Carlos Buell, USA.

July 25, 1862 - Skirmish at and near Trinity, AL.

July 25, 1862 - Federal expedition to Lake Pontchartrain, Pass Manchac, and up the Tehefuncta and Pearl Rivers, LA, with skirmishes. (Jul 25-Aug 2)

July 25, 1862 - Confederate expedition from Holly Springs, MS, to Bolivar and Jackson, TN, as Col. Joseph Wheeler's, CSA, Cavalry penetrates 70 miles behind Union lines burning bridges, etc. (Jul 25-Aug 1)

July 25, 1862 - Skirmishes near Mountain Store, and the Big Piney, MO. (Jul 25-26)

July 25, 1862 - Skirmish at Clinton Ferry, TN, with a Confederate retreat away from the Union foraging party.

July 25, 1862 - Affair at Summerville, WV, as Confederate Cavalry surprise the Union post there in the middle of the night.

July 25, 1863 - Department of East Tennessee, comprised of 17,800 men under Simon Bolivar Buckner, is merged into Braxton Bragg's Department of Tennessee. Major General Buckner is assign command of a corps.

July 25, 1863 - Skirmish at Brownsville, AR.

July 25, 1863 - Skirmish near New Hope Station, KY, dispersing the Rebels.

July 25, 1863 - Col. John S. Scott's Confederate Raid into Eastern Kentucky. (Jul 25-Aug 6)

July 25, 1863 - Skirmish at Williamsburg, KY, with Col. John S. Scott, CSA.

July 25, 1863 - Federal expedition from New Berne to Winton, aboard the steamers, Colonel Rucker and Utica, and skirmish at Potecasi Creek, NC, with destruction of Confederate cotton, supplies, and capture of prisoners. (Jul 25-31)

July 25, 1863 - Skirmishes near Steubenville and Springfield, OH, with Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan, CSA.

July 25, 1863 - The Confederate Dept. of East Tennessee is merged into the Dept. of Tennessee, under the command of Gen. Braxton Bragg.

July 25, 1863 - Skirmish at Barbee's Cross-Roads, VA.

July 25, 1863 - Federal scout to Goose Creek, VA, to recapture horses and cattle stolen by the Rebels and being hidden on Lowe's Island, on the Upper Potomac. Federals run into parties of Maj. John S. Mosby's Cavalry twice. (Jul 25-27)

July 25, 1863 - Federal expedition to Gloucester Court-House, VA, and capture of supplies including the Rebel mail carrier with his mail from Richmond.

July 25, 1863 - Federal expedition from Portsmouth, VA, to Jackson, NC, and skirmish; Brig. Gen. Matt Whitaker, CSA, defending. (Jul 25-Aug 3)

July 25, 1864 - The siege of Petersburg is ongoing.

July 25, 1864 - Brig. Gen. Clement Hoffman Stevens, CSA, dies at Atlanta, GA, from battle wounds received at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek, GA, on Jul 20.

July 25, 1864 - Federal Cavalry expedition from Decatur to Courtland, AL, and skirmish. (Jul 25-28)

July 25, 1864 - Affair at Courtland, Northern AL.

July 25, 1864 - Affair at Benton, AR, where the Yankees kill Brig. Gen. George M. Holt, of the Arkansas militia.

July 25, 1864 - Federal scout in Yell County, AR, with skirmishes, where the Yankees kill the 2 Newsom brothers. (Jul 25-Aug 11)

July 25, 1864 - Federal expedition against the Sioux Indians in the Dakota Territory, Maj. Gen. John Pope, USA, is now commanding the Dept. of the Northwest. (Jul 25-Oct 8)

July 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Williamsport, MD.

July 25, 1864 - Federal scout from Fulton, MO, against bushwhackers. (Jul 25-26)

July 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Pleasant Hill, MO.

July 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Martinsburg, WV.

July 25, 1864 - Skirmish at Bunker Hill, WV, as Lieut. Gen. Jubal Early, CSA, pursues the retreating Federals.

July 25, 1866 - Congress establishes the rank of "General of the Armies" and Ulysses S. Grant is immediately promoted to 4-star general and put in this position. William Tecumseh Sherman assumes the rank of Lieutenant General.

July 25, 1866 - Congress creates the rank of full Admiral. David Farragut is appointed to that rank.
