Publishes the poem "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Sam becomes a vice president of The Emancipation League. He helps to organize the Freedmen's Inquiry Commission.


1871
Daughters marry. Forms the "Town and Country Club" with literary friends like Charlotte Cushman, Samuel Coleman,and George E. Waring. It continues to meet for thirty years.

1874Publishes essay "Sex and Education."


1899
Publishes autobiography, "Reminiscence"


1908
First Woman Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Publishes final volume of poems, "At Sunset."
