Like everything I read about Forrest always apologizing for him and always the other person starts it. Look at the list of people he assaulted and always its the other guy provoking Forrest. I want to point out these people are all junior to Forrest and they would have know about Forrest pretense towards violence. I doubt these stories none of the juniors would have provoke Forrest. I bet if we could go back and watch each event Forrest was the provoker... Plus, You can not go around hitting people provoked or not... People fear Jackson but he did not have to go around beating people up...

Even Forrest’s more sympathetic biographers relate accounts where Forrest bashed a scout’s head against a tree for bringing him false information, slapped a lieutenant into a river because he would not roll up his sleeves and join his men in building a bridge, knocked another out of a boat with an oar for refusing to help paddle across the Tennessee River, beat a soldier with a branch, and shot a color-bearer for fleeing a rout.

Forrest comments towards his superiors is something you just do not do. Again, it is the superiors fault because they wrong Forrest in some way. No, if true he should have been arrested to be remind him is place...
so what would you say about general der panzertruppe (that's a rank / ***) hermann balck having oberstleutnant (lt col) johann schottke shot without even convening a drumhead court? schottke was balck's artillery comander and hadn't given fire support while being totally drunk on duty?

balck was jailed for it after the war but i'm rather sure schottke would have preferred getting his head bashed into a bunker wall instead of posing against it.

you are truely a late 20th century gentleman but i doubt many of these were around during forrest's lifetime

Well, gee, I haven't even gotten to Chickamauga!

By the way - you bet he shot that color bearer. The guy was running for the rear with the flag, wouldn't stop and the troops thought Forrest had ordered a retreat.

Arrested. Hmmm... He was constable and coroner for DeSoto county and four times alderman for Memphis - all elected positions. A lot of somebodies didn't think he was bad.

If I remember rightly this was after the war... won them all on his name alone... I would not be surprised he did those jobs well...

No, Forrest was constable/coroner of DeSoto County before the war. In fact, it was right after the well-known Forrest-Matlock shoot out in Hernando's plaza. He was elected alderman after this incident as well - several times!
