The famous First Battle of Auburn caused Stuart to find a ravine to hide his large cavalry force to wait for help. The fame Stuart had got himself trapped between two Union Corps. He hides until Ewell comes to his aid and fights the Second Battle of Auburn... It said this episode is well written about it but I did know about it...

But soon Stuart’s joy turned to concern as he received word of large Federal infantry in his rear. As Lomax’s men guarded the important crossroads they found themselves confronted with the entire III Corps under Maj. Gen. French. Amazingly French himself with his staff led the column with no scouts in front. The Confederate cavalrymen soon opened fire and a bullet went through French’s hat. As Pvt. John Haley wrote “had it gone through his heart or head, it would not have grieved us.” Soon, Lomax was pushed out of Auburn by the III Corps and now the II Corps was in the area as well. Stuart was cut off from Lee.

Leaving Catlett Stuart and his cavalry rode back to find Auburn in Federal hands. Lomax was no match for two Federal corps and he rode west to join with Fitz Lee’s cavalry. Stuart considered his options – riding east was not possible, there were at least 20,000 Federals in that direction. Riding north was out of the question as the III Corps blocked that route. He could not ride south or west as his route was blocked by the II Corps. Stuart decided to “conceal my whereabouts, if possible, from the enemy” and hide his two brigades of cavalry in a small ravine a few hundred yards east of Auburn. Surrounded by low lying hills with a small creek running along the floor of the ravine, the area was narrow near the road but broadened northward from the road. A small patch of woods along the road concealed the entrance and it could fit Stuart’s two brigades, wagons and horse artillery.

Stuart decided to send five riders to alert Lee, hoping at least one would get through the Federal lines. These men would have to navigate through Federal infantry and cavalry pickets then ride hard for Warrenton, 6 miles to the west. Stuart wrote later that he believed a great opportunity could arise if he could “cooperate with any attack made by our main body upon the flank.” But this was hindsight for Stuart, on the night of the 13th he was mostly concerned with escape.

The First Battle of Auburn was fought on October 13, 1863, between Union infantry and Confederate cavalry forces at the start of the Bristoe Campaign during the American Civil War. A Union infantry column stumbled upon a Confederate cavalry reconnaissance party and a short, inconclusive fight ensued. The Confederate cavalry withdrew in the face of the superior Union force, but a much larger body of Confederate cavalry under Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart, attempting to raid a Union wagon train became entrapped by the column, forcing them to abandon the raid and hide in a ravine overnight awaiting Confederate infantry to come to their aid.

The Second Battle of Auburn was fought on October 14, 1863, in Fauquier County, Virginia, between Union and Confederate forces in the American Civil War. Confederate forces led by Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell led a sortie to extricate Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry command, trapped between two Union columns and clashed with the rearguard of the Federal II Corps under Brig. Gen. Gouverneur K. Warren. Stuart was successfully extricated but the Federal wagon train avoided Confederate capture in the inconclusive fight.

Here is a historical marker that gives you clues to Stuart's escape...

Reconnoitering on 13 Oct. 1863, Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart found himself and two cavalry brigades cut off from the Army of Northern Virginia by the Union II Corps. The Confederates concealed themselves all night just north of here in a ravine only half a mile from the Federals. The next morning, as Lt. Gen. Richard S. Ewell's infantry corps marched to aid him, with seven pieces of horse artillery Stuart opened fire on Union Brig. Gen. John C. Caldwell's division on a nearby hill and scattered it. Stuart and his men then charged Federal infantry approaching from Auburn and broke through to safety.
