Few if any teachers teach that the Confedracy had significant internal opposition . Very few Southern high school students have any idea of the UCST, Unionist guerrillas or Unionist Regiments.

I baked hardtack for class. Few takers. I mentioned that George MacDonald Fraser praised hardtack and tea as "one of the great meals." during his time in the army. One of the students said "That's the stockholm syndrome right there."

Maybe now, but not way back when. Remember the movie Shenandoah? It had black Union troops, guerillas and Southern Unionists (Jimmy Stewart and family). And I knew about the Union troops raised in my state. Heck, today they don't know the difference between a Union and Confederate monument.

I haven't seen Shendoah but I doubt most Southerners are aware of Unionism. I will see if Netflix has that movie.

We're doing the Emancipation Proclamation today. My take is that the 7 Days Battles, where Lee stopped McClellan, is the genesis of the EP when it was clear the war wouldn't be ended in 1862, but go on for at least another year(of course it would be far longer).

The longer the war, the more disruption, and the greater the desire to end slavery, seen as the source of all the mischief.

I remember that movie! I saw it on TV when I was young, and then again a few years ago.

I think the American Civil War needs to be down graded and WWone, WWtwo, and the Cold War need to be given more time in school. The minority kids are becoming the majority of the students and all kids from all ethnic, race, and religion groups will better relate to those 20th century topics, plus those topics effect their lives more than the ever did the American Civil War does. I believe the civil war following the path of NASCAR , golf, baseball into to oblivion... I am a heretic...

Nonsense the ACW is indispensable to understanding US history. America
sort of ended slavery although convict leasing lasted a good eighty years later. It resulted in some civil rights for African Americans in some places. Obviously not all the racial problems were solved but it was a begining.

Don't tell anyone, but as long as I want. Because of the covid disrupted schedule, probably about three weeks.

A couple of days ago I was talking with some students, between classes and I say "If I could go back in time, I would go to Ford's Theater and save Lincoln!" I have a student who literally has said nothing all year, he's shy, shy, shy and practically mute. But this time he spoke up:
"No you wouldn't."
"Why not?" I asked.
"Because its a paradox. If you saved Lincoln, you wouldn't got back in time to save Lincoln. You wouldn't think of it." I
I thought few words, maybe, but he's thinking.
