Is why Nixon would have been impeached. Senator Ford was know to other Senators and was well like and the republicans senators knew how fiscally conservative he was. If you notice once he was affirmed as V. P. Nixon days were number. If Spiro had still been his VP the senate would not have convicted him. Nixon should have selected some nobody governor and he would have stayed president

I think Nixon believed the polls - that his popularity was down too far. But...that had never stopped him before! A lot of background drama was in all this from the Eisenhower White House on. Ike was a good, honest guy like he was a good, honest soldier - we used to elect victorious generals president just because of that! Ford was like a long pause before things resumed. I think he pardoned Robert E Lee and Jeff Davis (who would have been highly offended!) and that was just about the highlight of his caretaker presidency. He was also comic relief - always swimming into a wall, falling off Air Force One, coming a cropper somehow! Like the newsman on WKRP - always a bandage somewhere... Some think there was a deal in place but I don't - Ford just wanted to forget about it all and get the ship righted! Go on off to San Clemente, Dick, and write your memoirs...
