Welcome, Bilbo...

Samwise Gamgee and Frodo Baggins the true Hero's defeating Sauron. Bilbo just outsmarted a dragon and was invisible and wrote the tale... Maybe, its was Gullom for he fell into the fire, with the ring...

Sam is the hero, Tolkien said so himself. But Bilbo I think is my favorite hobbit. You?

Favorite hobbit? Sam, for me. Frodo got a finger bit off because he messed with the ring - couldn't have finished the job without Sam. Always figured Gandalf didn't come so much for Frodo as for Sam.

Bilbo was an odd hobbit... so was Gullom... to be so corrupted so easily by the ring... But the ring did select Gullom but it select Bilbo too... Bilbo had the ring for years and held back it's corrupting influence...

Frodo found out the same thing - just once was all it took. Sam, though, when he had it for a short time, never used it and couldn't get rid of it quick enough. Use it and next thing you know you're wearing black capes and riding around on dead horses working for somebody else!

I love to see so many share my interest in both the civil war and Tolkien.

I'm a big fan of the Peter Jackson trilogy (except the ghost army deus ex machina). Yes, I have attended an all-day marathon of the extended editions.

The movies are better than the books. Tolkien was a great creator of fictional worlds, but not a great writer of fictional stories. If alive today he'd have a great career with Wizards of the Coast.

My pet peeve with LOTR is that Sauron deserved to win. Frodo failed. The day is only saved by Gollum's insanity. I found that really unsatisfying.
