at if on Oct 17, 1859, John Brown's plan had been to raid the armory and transported the arms into Virginia and even as far as North Carolina along the way arming the slaves. Instead of his poorly plan of staying and waiting for the slaves to come to him. He could have been another Spartacus.
If he had traveled south into Virginia and North Carolina raiding farms and plantations arming the slaves, it would have been like Spartacus traveling through the Italian peninsula in 71BC. He would have created a small army in days forcing the United States government and America to finally comfort the slavery issue. This could have happened had John Brown have better planned his revolt.
He was in Harper's ferry like a day in half before Colonel Lee showed up with the marines. If he would have loaded the weapons on wagons and headed south he could have had a two or more day head start on Colonel Lee. By the time Col. Lee had caught up with him be could have had a small army of armed slaves with more coming to his aid once the word was out about the revolt.
John Brown may have been able to travel for weeks before his revolt had been put down because there was really no standing U. S. army anywhere close by. By the time the U.S. government and even local militias got their act together, John Brown could have freed hundreds and hundreds of slaves and armed them too. he would have truly gone down in history with an explanation point!
Could you picture hundreds of slaves yelling " I am John Brown!"
