never heard of these nuts
My brother was with a Croatian lady for a long time - seems this is quite a delight there and further east around Georgia, Armenia. Really, if you can get your hands on a good jar you'll be a happy person!

In this area of the country, black walnuts are ubiquitous. The trees are easily recognizable especially in winter. Very dark, alsmost black bark and very gnarly limbs and branches. The nuts are a huge pain in the ass to get at the meat.

The ones we had at the old ranch were VERY old! That's why they were mixed with English walnut, to make them easier to shell. Real black walnuts...sit back for a few hours with your pick and hammer and gloves! Somebody, though, got smart and figured out how to soak them and eat shells and all... That bothered me, eating nut shells, but it shouldn't. I do it every time I use commercial nutmeg!
