I am looking for sources on government funding for Confederate statues. Most of the dozen statues I have researched received government support, either direct funding, or land and infrastructure. Anyone know a good source for info on this?

Hi Pat,

Dr. Karen L. Cox @SassyProf (Twitter handle) would be one of the best people to consult on this query

lOOK!!!!

None of the guarded cemeteries has been vandalized since the security was put in place. Records obtained by The Associated Press through the Freedom of Information Act show that the VA has spent nearly $3 million on the cemetery security since August 2017. Another $1.6 million is budgeted for fiscal 2019 to pay for security at all Confederate monuments, which could include other sites. The agency has not determined when the security will cease.

WHY they were built...

As Brian Palmer and Seth Freed Wessler reported in Smithsonian Magazine, “these memorials were created and funded by Jim Crow governments to pay homage to a slave-owning society and to serve as blunt assertions of dominance over African-Americans.”

Historically, the installation of Confederate monuments went hand in hand with the disenfranchisement of black people. The historical record suggests that monument-building peaked during three pivotal periods: from the late 1880s into the 1890s, as Reconstruction was being crushed; from the 1900s through the 1920s, with the rise of the second Ku Klux Klan, the increase in lynching and the codification of Jim Crow; and in the 1950s and 1960s, around the centennial of the war but also in reaction to advances in civil rights.

Here...

Virginia has spent roughly $9 million to maintain Confederate graves, disbursing hundreds of thousands of those dollars directly to the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a private organization described as “arguably the leading advocate for Confederate memorials.” Influential UDC leader Mildred Lewis Rutherford traveled the country in full plantation regalia sharing her conviction that slaves had been “the happiest set of people on the face of the globe”—”well-fed, well-clothed, and well-housed”—and that, after emancipation, “the Ku Klux Klan was necessary to protect the white woman.”

Here...

Georgia taxpayers have spent $1.1 million since 2011 on a state park in Crawfordville, located in a majority black county with one of the lowest median household incomes in the state, that honors Confederate vice president Alexander Hamilton Stephens, who said the Confederacy’s “foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery—subordination to the superior race—is his natural and normal condition.”

Read the articles and see your tax dollars at work....

Do they realize that most of these monuments were paid for with private funds? And to those not blinded by modern racial politics, it's blatantly obvious that the vast majority are memorials to the dead, many of whom never came home from the war, and whose families did not know where or how they died. The monuments are gravestones, granting closure to grieving families. That there are so many all across the South is a testament to just how many dead there were in that war.

No, when I read about a statue its local governments funding the local Confederate statue with help from local Civic organizations.

Feel free to offer some statistics on this. The only people I'm seeing agitating for removal are left-wing reporters and politicians.
who votes in those 'left wing' (center right in my opinion) politicians again?
I don't see any mass demand by the general public to defund this.
they probably don't know about it (the truly educated voter is a myth)

States maintaining graves of the fallen? That's money well spent.

Who asked them -and in many cases required them- to go to war?

The States.

Why shouldn't they maintain the graves?

Well said. They don't care though. Only the racism narrative matters.

That real people (widows, fatherless children, childless parents, etc) donated nickels, & dimes, many years later to raise these memorials is irrelevant to the woke crowd. There are hundreds of these memorials that the woke crowd doesn't even know exist. They don't know of them all because, many are in little tiny towns, & rural areas of places, they'll never see. They mean plenty to the descendants of those who were lost though.

No, we only maintain the graves of soldiers- Union, Confederate, WWI, WWII, etc.
they kinda were soldierse - doesn't mean they are all too popular with the majority, though
