The idea really got started with General William T Sherman's son, who was a Catholic priest and the pastor of the Santa Barbara Mission in Santa Barbara. Most of the Jewish and Catholic Civil War Officers were in charge of supplies like CSA Col Abraham C Myers from Fort Myers in Lee County Florida. The Myers family were friends with the Shermans before the war and both were friends with General John Sutter at Fort Sutter in California who was also Catholic. Everyone after the Civil War had homes in Santa Barbara California around the mission including Hollywood Producer from Pittsburgh David O Selznick who was related to Actress Carmel Myers. Another home was owned by the Henry Ford family. The Chryslers were also there. Some of the Fords were known to be Catholic as well as the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and Roosevelts. Newscaster Anderson Cooper's parents were married in the Santa Barbara Mission. The George Tyler Moore center for the Study of the Civil War had a talk on Scarlett O'Hara who married Frank Kennedy. They say she was a real person who was friends with the Lee and Kennedy families in the area. For sure writer Margaret Mitchell's grandfather was wounded at the Burnside Bridge a few miles from the George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War. George Tyler Moore was also Catholic. The Ford house is about a mile from the Mission. These are my pictures so no copyright need.

General John Sutter at Fort Sutter was evil...

Yes, John Sutter was Catholic. To gain permission to settle in Mexican-controlled California, Sutter converted to Catholicism and became a Mexican citizen in 1841.

Scarlett O'Hara
Margaret Mitchell used to say that her Gone with The Wind characters were not based on real people, although modern researchers have found similarities to some of the people in Mitchell's own life. Scarlett's upbringing resembled that of Mitchell's maternal grandmother, Annie Fitzgerald Stephens (1844–1934), who was raised predominantly Irish Catholic on a plantation near Jonesboro in Fayette, not unlike the O’Hara family.[7] Mitchell was engaged three times, although only married twice. Her first engagement was to Clifford Henry, a bayonet instructor at Camp Gordon in World War I. He was killed overseas in October 1918 while fighting in France,[7] similar to O’Hara and her first husband, Charles Hamilton. Mitchell's mother, Maybelle Stephens Mitchell, contracted influenza and died shortly before Mitchell could reach home, similar to Ellen O’Hara dying before Scarlett fled Atlanta. Rhett Butler is thought to be based on Mitchell's first husband, Red Upshaw because Upshaw left Atlanta for the Midwest and never returned.[7] Her second marriage was to John Robert Marsh, and they were married until her death in 1949.[7]

Yes and General Phillip Sheridan was the lead Pall Bearer at his funeral in Washington DC. From the records of the Sheridan O'Hara Murphy families of Pittsburgh near Sheridan PA. You can trace all of this by Margaret Mitchell's grandfather being wounded at the Burnside Bridge and being carried down Lee Town Road to a hospital run by a black doctor trained at Harvard. This should not be hard research. From the records of the Twiggs family of Twiggs County Georgia with relatives in Texas, Salt Lake City, Baltimore and some say Jamestown VA and Cape Cod Boston.

Off by a year...

Dr. Alexander Thomas Augusta was the first Black man commissioned as a surgeon in the Union Army in 1863, becoming the first Black doctor to hold a commission and serve as a regimental surgeon for African American troops. Augusta was a pioneer who also became the first Black hospital administrator in the U.S. and the first Black faculty member at a U.S. medical school, at Howard University.

black doctor

But you do have something. The Union Army hired black doctors as contract workers...

After the Battle of Antietam, civilian and contract Black doctors provided crucial medical care to Union soldiers, though the specific names and roles of those who served at the battlefield are not widely documented. Their contributions were part of a wider effort by Black physicians who served the Union cause during the Civil War, both as contracted civilians and, in a few cases, as commissioned officers.

This black doctor lived in Middleway
.

Middleway suffered, along with the rest of the countryside, during the Civil War. For northern armies, Jefferson County was a gateway to the South through the Shenandoah Valley. Middleway was at the intersection of two important roads, and it was located close to major trade centers. Soldiers from both the Union and Confederate armies came through the village throughout the war, and several skirmishes occurred in and around the town. At least four doctors lived in Middleway, and a building, which still stands, served as a hospital. After the battle of Antietam in 1862, wagons brought wounded soldiers to the hospital, straining its capacity of 50 patients.
The largest engagement in the town was the battle of Smithfield in August 1864.

After the war freed slaves established a community, Slabtown, on the southern edge of the village. They built two frame churches and a number of homes there. Although the community no longer exists, the foundations of several buildings can still be seen. A cemetery that served Slabtown also remains.

From the Civil War through the 1880's, times were hard. Many young people left the village to seek better opportunities elsewhere. Stagnation continued for many years and Middleway remained a small country village with many buildings dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

I think the town goes back to the 1600's when Pocahontas was alive. So who was that black doctor related to the O'Hara family of O'Hara Township in Pittsburgh near the Rhett Butler Fairgrounds everyone talks about? Direct from the Pittsburgh records of David O Selznick. Another hint: He was close friends with Frederick Douglass in Rochester NY. Frederick Douglass was always sure to get his picture taken with George Eastman who sold movie film to Hollywood.

In Margaret Mitchell's novel Gone with the Wind and the 1939 film adaptation, there is no Black doctor related to the fictional O'Hara family. The novel and film, set in the antebellum and Reconstruction-era South, feature Black characters only in subservient roles as enslaved people or servants.

here...

The story of the library system in Atlanta began more than 30 years before Atlanta’s first public library was built in 1902. It started in 1867 when Darwin Jones, a teller at the Georgia National Bank, led the founding of the Young Men’s Library Association (YMLA) as a subscription library. Membership was open to men (white) “in any honorable pursuit” approved by the Association’s Board. In 1873 membership was opened to women although the organization retained its original name. Also, a full-time librarian, bonded for $2,000 was employed for the first time. As the need for a public library became more widely recognized a committee led by YMLA President Eugene Mitchell (father of writer Margaret Mitchell) persuaded Andrew Carnegie to donate $100,000 to the City of Atlanta for a library building. The city agreed to an annual outlay of $5,000 for the operation of a free library. In 1902 the Carnegie Library opened on land donated by the YMLA at the corner of Carnegie Way and Forsyth Streets.

Carnegie is a very common name in Pittsburgh. So it Mellon. Although not as common as Lewis and Clark or even Myers and Lind.

AI Overview

There is no single "Myers family" in the Pittsburgh area, as the surname is common and has diverse origins; however, some documented Myers histories include Jonathan Myers of Hamburg, Germany, who settled near Hancock, Maryland, and whose descendants, including a blacksmith, lived in Elizabeth Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania by 1910. Others include the Meyers family of Centre County, with residents like John C. Meyer, an attorney in Bellefonte, and William H. Meyer, a merchant, and the Myers brothers, William and Billy, who were from the West Fairview area, also in Pennsylvania.

Myers in Allegheny County

  • One specific lineage connects to Jonathan Myers, who came from Germany before 1790 and settled near Hancock, Maryland.
  • His great-grandson, Curtis Myers, walked to Elizabeth Township in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he was a blacksmith and built a house in McKeesport.
  • This house served as a home for three generations of the Myers family.
Myers in Central Pennsylvania

  • The PAGenWeb site notes various Myers families in Centre County.
  • Examples include John C. Meyer, a lawyer in Bellefonte.
  • William H. Meyer was a merchant, and both were among a list of residents in the 1890s.
Myers Brothers in the West Fairview Area

  • In the West Fairview area, brothers Billy and Lynn Myers rose to prominence.
  • Their family moved there so Billy could work for the Pennsylvania Railroad.
  • They both became professional baseball players after being discovered by a scout, according to the Historical Society of East Pennsboro.
Other Pennsylvania Myers Families
  • Daisy and William Myers:
This family was the first Black family to move into Levittown, PA, in 1957, in Bristol Township, which drew national attention and violent opposition.
  • Albert Cook Myers:
Born in Adams County, PA, in 1874, he was a well-known historian and graduate of Swarthmore College.
  • Rudolph Meyer:
His family settled in Annville, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, in the 1700s, and their descendants remained in the area for many generations.
  • Johannes Meyer:
This family, prominent in old Amwell Township, Hunterdon County, was prominent in Pennsylvania, where they had a history of spelling variation with many variations of the name.

So I get the Myers records straight. This is the Myers family I am talking about. They were friends with Thomas Jefferson and Paul Revere and knew Mayflower Passenger Miles Standish. There are lots of records on this Jewish group who made silver chalices for Cardinal John McCloskey as well as the Catholic relatives of George Washington. Some say they made silver bullets for the Lone Ranger and was related to Actor Lee Powell. From the records of the S&S Myers and Company Contractors in Silk, Boats Churches and Silver with offices on Middlway WV, Jenny Lind Street in Pittsburgh, Boston on Dedham St and Santa Barbara near Jefferson High School and the Mission Santa Barbara Where General William T Sherman's son Father Thomas Ewing Sherman was the head pastor for many years. Some records suggest they donated money to have the Santa Barbara Mission rebuilt at the 1925 quake. One of them studied art at the University of California in Santa Barbara in the 1970's and stayed at the Ford House overlooking the ocean. They also had relatives on Breckinridge Street in Gettysburg at the time of the Battle related to the Culps of Culp's Hill.

One of us was General John Twiggs Myers from Fort Myers in Lee County Florida. He was part of the Boxer Rebellion in China and this was his aide MOH recipient Marine Pvt Franklin J Phillips in the Lewis and Clark lot in Pittsburgh next to War of 1812 War Hero Col Jessy Sill. The Twiggs family seem to be into everything.

It's General John Twiggs Myers and as Meriwether Lewis said, we are not nice people. That is, we were always drunk and late like General Grant. So that is us. Lots of records of John Twiggs Myers at the Royal City in Beijing China. Some say we are related to the Emperor of China. I had some Flying Tigers descendants look into that who live next to the Stilwell Museum on the Ling River but all they came up with are pictures of the Roosevelts. I might as well post some photographs about Franklin Phillips. Although there is a mistake made. Franklin Phillips is under the US flag at the Royal City and not standing by the wagon wheel since he was killed in action standing right next to John Twiggs Myers. The Twiggs family had a gold mine in Twiggs County Georgia and of course were in charge of Texas around the time of the Alamo. They even hung out in Baltimore and Nauvoo. I never thought they went to St George Washington County Utah. Last is the picture of the granddaughter of Dr Sun Yet Sen MD by a stature of George Washington on Mount Washington. She is friends with the Pittsburgh and West Virginia Rockefellers who were married into the Reaper McCormick family. My take they are connected to the LaMay family of the B-29 Bombers at Chengdu.
