Howdy y’all
Just back from the Funkstown 160.
Hot action on the field and in the camps
Thanks to local EMS who cared for the victim of the heat. It got me but only after I had “fought” off two Yankees with an implement. Folks were dropping like flies. Brutal but it always is.

This battle... part of Lee's retreat from Gettysburg...

Here is a summary of the first battle of Funkstown on July 7th, 1863...

The first Battle of Funkstown occurred when the 6th U.S. Cavalry was scouting the area and were spotted by the 7th Virginia Cavalry. As the 7th Virginia Cavalry charged, the 6th U.S. Cavalry quickly deployed skirmishers. During the initial attack, the 7th Virginia Cavalry managed to push the Union troopers back. Orders were given to the Union troopers to mount up and fall back. While they quickly did this, a pursuit took place. The Union troopers of the 6th U.S. Cavalry fell back upon Brigadier General Wesley Merritt’s brigade and the 7th Virginia Cavalry quickly fell back. Casualties from the first Battle of Funkstown for the Union was 10 killed, 15 wounded and 66 men missing. The Confederates had 2 wounded and 9 missing.

Jeb Stuart (and John Imboden) came out of that retreat looking very good. If Stuart messed up earlier (and I don't think he did!), he certainly made up for it.

John Buford and Wesley Merritt were the right cavalrymen to send after Stuart - every time Stuart and Buford met, it was a draw. They couldn't beat each other but they sure looked good trying! Stuart underestimated Buford once but never again. Buford, for his part, almost single-handedly put an end to the myth of the Black Horse invincibility which was actually making Union cavalry avoid Stuart. Buford didn't buy it!

Our vittles “raid” into Funkstown last Saturday morning was a success! I got a nice ham sandwich, an orange and goober peas. Water was also received. I heard we were later driven out of town by the Yankees but it was peaceful when we went in at 9 am.

For us there was cavalry (as you can see above) but in our scenario it was largely artillery duels and then infantry attack. Two day event and some of it was fought on actual battlefield. I am of two minds on this and honestly just don’t know about which of my internal debate is stranger.

It’s my understanding that there was some search for vittles in town and they were pushed out by Union later in the day. So some street fighting but we cleared out after we found the ham sandwich and went back to our battery camp.
