Here's my recipe for fry bread. Hope you like it!

Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/2 cups warm water
4 cups oil for frying

Directions:
1. Combine flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir in 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water. Knead until soft but not sticky. Let sit for half hour. Shape dough into balls and pull out to desired size, poking a hole somewhere in it.
2. Fry one at a time in hot oil, turning to brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels.

There's variations on this - no two aunties make it alike!

Local Chinese restaurant has a fried ball with sugar sprinkles. Powdered sugar would be nice - imagination might run wild after that. There is yeast-risen fry bread Frenchie Beignets for example. Keep this up and I will be looking for a Fry Daddy at the local thrift.

The British have fry bread, too - they fry up a piece of regular bread. (Not bad results, either, if you don't over do the butter.)

Fry bread is so flexible. Indian tacos is my favorite! Chili, lettuce, tomatoes, onion, cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, salsa... We raise thousands every fair for college funds. (Except this year...no fair! We always had our annual cowboys and Indians showdown with the Cow Belles and their super good hamburgers...)

I can go on like Forrest Gump's pal, Bubba, about fry bread! Stuffed fry bread, fry bread hamburgers, jam and fry bread, honey and butter and fry bread, blueberry toppings and fry bread....

Sometimes we add a little sugar to the recipe and make Strawberry Fry Bread. (Like strawberry shortcake!)

Ooooh, chicken and waffles move aside... fried chicken and fry bread! Here's some Navajos having a good time making fry bread. They make theirs bigger and thinner than we do, and slap it around like a tortilla - we just pull. It makes for different textures.

And the secret unknown until now...

Oh, y'all are spoiled over there! We get Wonder bread and wonder what's in it. There used to be ONE mill up here - the only one east of the Rockies - that ground flour European style. They had all different stones and could give you what you wanted. And, they could get different grain varieties - industrialized wheat is one of the big reasons we can't cook bread here to save ourselves!
