  • The Constitution of the Confederate States of America is adopted by the convention held in Montgomery, AL, which is similar to the U.S. Constitution, except for certain provisions which allows for slavery and for states' rights.
  • The US Arsenal at Little Rock, AR, under Capt. James Totten, is seized by the Arkansas state troops, by order of Gov. Henry M. Rector.
Saturday February 8 1862
  • Martial law is declared throughout the State of Kansas.
  • Affair at Bolivar, MO.
  • The Confederate steamers, Sallie Wood and Muscle, are captured at Chickasaw, AL, by the USS Conestoga.
  • The Battle of Roanoke Island, NC, Albemarle Sound, with Col. Shaw, CSA, filling in for a sick Brig. Gen. Henry Alexander Wise, CSA, surrenders their position to the Union forces under Brig. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside, USA, and with the participation of the following Union gunboats: Brinker, Ceres, Chasseur, Commodore, Barney, Commodore Perry, Delaware, Granite, Hetzel, Hunchback, Hussar, Lockwood, Louisiana, Morse, Pickett, Pioneer, Putnam, J. N. Seymour, Shawseen, Southfield, Stars and Stripes, Underwriter, Valley City, Vidette, and the Whitehead.
  • Union gunboats move from Roanoke Island, NC, up the Pasquotank River toward Elizabeth City, NC.
  • Skirmish at Linn Creek, VA.
  • Skirmish at the mouth of the Blue Stone, Mercer County, WV, by Lieut. Col. William E. Peters, CSA, 45th VA Infantry.

  • George Baird Hodge, CSA, is appointed Brig. Gen.
  • Federal expedition down the Arkansas River, aboard the steamer, Davenport, near Little Rock, AR, against guerrillas. (Feb 8-9)
  • Federal scout from Helena to Madison, AR, with skirmish (Feb 12), with guerrillas near Madison, also destroying about 2,500 bushels of corn and large amounts of bacon. (Feb 8-13)
  • Maj. Gen. Grenville M. Dodge, USA, assumes the command of the territory formerly comprised in the Dept. of Kansas.
  • Affair at (1) New Market (Feb 8), where guerrillas captured and burned a train of 9 wagons; (2) skirmish at Bradfordsville (Feb 8), where the guerrillas murder 3 train guards they took as hostages, and (3) skirmish at Hustonville, KY, where the pursuing Yankees make the guerrillas pay for what they've done. (Feb 9). (Feb 8-9)
  • Massachusetts and Pennsylvania become the 9th and 10th states to ratify the 13th amendment, which will abolish slavery.
  • Action with Indians on the North Platte River, near Rush Creek, the Nebraska Territory. (Feb 8-9)
  • Skirmish at Cannon's Bridge, South Edisto River, SC.
  • Skirmish at Walker's or Valley Bridge, Edisto River, SC.
  • Skirmish near White Pond, SC.
