  • Jefferson Davis is surprised to receive word at his plantation home in Mississippi, of his election as the 1st President of the Confederate States of America.
Monday February 10 1862
  • James Patton Anderson, CSA, is promoted to Brig. Gen.
  • Action at Elizabeth City, or Cobb's Point, NC, between Union gunboats and Confederate forces with the loss of all remaining Confederate ships, including the CSS Ellis, Fanny, Forrest, Seabird, and the Black Warrior. The following Union gunboats participated: Brinker, Ceres, Commodore Perry, Delaware, Hetzel, Louisiana, Morse, Putnam, J. N. Seymour, Shawseen, Underwriter, Valley City, and the Whitehead.

  • Skirmish at Old River, LA, where Capt. Tucker, USA, repels the Confederates.

  • Skirmish at Hillsborough, MS, with Maj. Gen. Sherman, USA, the Meridian, MS, Expedition.
  • Skirmish at Morton, MS, the Meridian, MS, Expedition.
  • Skirmish at Pocahontas, MO.
  • The USS Florida captures and destroys two blockade runners off Masonbrough Inlet, NC.
  • Maj. Gen. George Stoneman, USA, supersedes Brig. Gen. Jacob D. Cox, USA, in command of the 23rd US Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland, TN.
Friday February 10 1865
  • Skirmish in Johnson's Crook, GA, as Maj. Gen. James B. Steedman, USA, commanding the District of the Etowah, has his men surprise the Confederates here, inflicting casualties.
  • The Dept. of the Cumberland is declared to consist of the State of Tennessee and such parts of Northern Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi as May be occupied by the troops under the command of Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, USA.
  • The Dept. of Kentucky (that consists of the State of Kentucky), is created, and assigned is Maj. Gen. John M. Palmer, USA, to its command.
  • All troops in the Depts. of Kentucky and the Cumberland are declared subject to orders of Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas, USA, except those posts on the east bank of the Mississippi River, which were subject to the order of Maj. Gen. Edward Sprigg Canby, USA.
  • Federal expedition from Brashear City to Lake Verret, LA. (Feb 10-11)
  • Skirmish at Kittredge's Sugar House, near Napoleonville, LA, with a small band of Confederates.
  • The Dept. of the Gulf is declared to embrace the States of Louisiana and Texas.
  • Federal expedition from Thibodeaux to Lake Verret, LA, as the Yankees continue to try to ferret out guerrillas; this time coming up empty handed as they traversed the plantations in the area. (Feb 10-13)
  • The Dept. of Mississippi is declared to embrace as much of the State of Mississippi as was occupied by the troops of the Military Division of West Mississippi on the river.
  • Federal scout from Friar's Point, MS, and skirmish, with yet another lone guerrilla who is surrounded by the Yankees at his ranch, where surrender was not an option.
  • Ohio and Missouri become the llth and 12th states to ratify the 13th amendment which will abolish slavery.
  • Skirmish at James Island, SC.
  • Skirmish at Johnson's Station,
  • Affair 9 miles from Triune, TN, at the house of the widow Patterson, where the Yankees surround Confederates, belonging to Lieut. Gen. John B. Hood's Army of the Tennessee, who were enjoying a ball held there. The Yankees estimate they killed 4 when they fired into the house, as the citizens removed the bodies to hide the fact there were guerrillas partaking in the festivities.
  • Capt. Raphael Semmes is promoted to Confederate Rear Admiral, CSN, and placed in command of the James River Squadron, VA, replacing Commodore J. K. Mitchell, CSN.
