It's amazing the life span some of these fakes have! There is another famous one of Grant and Lee together at Appomattox. Of course there were no pictures taken at Appomattox and it's strange that no one ever questioned this one of Grant and Lee! It was all over - especially in school textbooks. It was a really good mashup of two famous but individual pictures - Grant in front of his tent leaning on a tree, and Lee standing on his back porch in Richmond after his surrender.

That photo has been known to be fake for a long time.

There's another of Grant sporting a long, square beard - looks like somebody stuck a big paint brush under his chin! (Apparently they did...)

As far as I know, that one is legit. It was made when Grant was a newly minted brigadier and he was going through a brief phase of vanity.

Yes, I've heard that as well. The big problem there is Grant went through his vanity phase much, much earlier and it really ended poorly for him. He wore his brand new West Point cadet uniform home and the neighbors laughed their faces off...he never wore it home again. Ouch! That's cringe worthy all the way to our time. (Guess who got the last laugh but was too classy to have it...)

I believe the story on this pic in question is that it was done for either some sort of reunion or presidential campaign, trying to enhance his war time image. There are some photos of Forrest that were messed with considerably for publicity purposes, and at least one of them was unquestioned until very recently.

See this webpage - picture of the fancy Grant is on the left. If you read the caption, I think you'll agree the photo was not fake.

I'll be - that's a good source, too. What did he do - trim the chin and leave the under jaw to grow? Now that I think of it, there's a photo of Lincoln with a totally punk buzz cut - it's real! Don't know who got ahold of his head that day...but it looked great.

Yeah. Kinda like a facial mullet.

so what - is there a point there somewhere?
Well, I suppose the point is that some of us were aware that photo was a fake. No deep, dark, hidden meaning.
