On Wednesday, October 14, 2020, Mill Springs Battlefield in Kentucky became the 421th unit in the National Park Service. After much support from congressional representatives, this Civil War battle site has received a new and high level for protection and interpretation. An article and news release earlier this week celebrated this preservation news previously on the ECW Blog.
Battlefield preservation is a process, and while enjoying the exciting moment of a new national monument protecting a Civil War battlefield, it is worth taking time to reflect on the years of work and citizens’ efforts to save and interpret this historic site.
This video from C-SPAN in 2014 shows the moment when a Kentucky legislator brought forward the bill to start the process of creating a national monument while pointing out the historic significance of the site.
