A new monument has been installed in Richmond, VA. As noted in the Washington Post (article is behind a paywall), "Richmond unveiled a new Emancipation and Freedom Monument on Wednesday (9/22/2021) — commemorating a far different set of rebels than the Confederate statues that have been coming down for the past year." The Post also notes that this is "one of few nationwide commemorating enslaved people."

This is a great monument that I can't wait to go visit. I do wish it had more of a depiction of the agency that African American had in ending bondage, though.

There is an artist who repurposes Confederate statues or monuments...

Today, that same Jackson equestrian statue, chopped apart and reconstructed by American artist Kara Walker, is in Los Angeles, the centerpiece of a new art exhibit reckoning with the US’s white supremacist monuments.

For the new exhibit, Jackson and his horse have been cut into pieces – “butchered”, in the words of co-curator Hamza Walker, into shank and round and rump – and then put back together to form a disjointed monster. The beast-man rears into the air, spare limbs flailing. Each detail is disturbing: the rider’s legs dangle backwards, with broken toes. His faceless head is perched on the beast’s snout. A clenched fist has tumbled to the ground.

Just my studying the works of ship builder Isaac Myers and his friend Frederick Douglass at the old B&O Building in Baltimore will tell you how this works. Frederick Douglass never missed a dedication of a Kodak Building in Rochester NY.

You like folklore and myth instead of history... You should be writing alternative history novels... this thread is about monuments...

Frederick Douglass did not dedicate a Kodak building in Rochester, but he did tour Kodak Park with George Eastman on Memorial Day in 1890, a year before he died. He was in Rochester that day to participate in the dedication of the Soldiers' Monument in Washington Square Park, along with President Benjamin Harrison and Civil War veterans. The event at Kodak Park was part of his visit to the city

Well for sure Harry Lewis Gates of Harvard never heard of Issac Myers and his friend Frederick Douglass. I could go into it how all this connects to the Carnegie Mellon Frick Morgan Myers and Lind families of Rembrandt but I won't. Of course I have lots more pictures of the families of the North Star Newspaper and how they are related family wise. Rev Robert Jefferson Breckinridge DD is in the middle of this. He was know to hang out in Frederick MD, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Rochester NY.

Yes Gilbert Stuart and yes Rembrandt Peale. Again Carnegie Mellon Frick Morgan Myers Lind and Rembrandt and his Lighting. I should add the Pittsburgh families of Westinghouse Oppenheimer and Einstein to this. They are up in the right hand corner by KDKA.

The first commercial radio station is widely considered to be KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which began broadcasting on November 2, 1920, with the results of the Harding-Cox presidential election. Owned by the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company, it received the first commercial license for a broadcasting station

Why do you post?

The conflict over a valuable artwork with such high-stakes figures would make for a compelling historical fiction or alternate history narrative

All Lewis Strauss stuff. Just go to his grave site and look around. That is why I post. Everyone likes solid silver tea pots.

He also went to Mount St Marys. His cousin was also named John McCloskey and ran the school at Emmitsburg. He was friend with Protestant Rev William Breckinridge DD. They played cards together. Rev William Breckinridge DD married a Rochester from Rochester NY. All of them attended the wedding of Anna Myers to William H Seward III. They say Secretary of State William H Seward never heard of Ward Hill Lamon or any kind of actors.

Frances Bacon though...

Idola" can refer to the plural of "idolum," a Latin term for a false belief or a phantom, as used by Francis Bacon in his philosophy to describe four types of "idols" or "idols of the mind". It can also refer to a feminine name meaning "vision" in Greek, or an Indonesian word for "idol". In gaming, it is the name of several titles, such as the mobile game Idola: Phantasy Star Saga.
