Our Military budget is becoming a budget to conquer nations in the coming years, the last grasp of a dying power...

The proposal is absurd on the face of it, and it’s extremely unlikely that it is the product of a careful assessment of U.S. defense needs going forward. The plan would also add $5.8 trillion to the national debt over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Budget.

The first trillion-dollar budget begins...

It’s hard to fulfill one’s duty to be what Eisenhower called an “alert and knowledgeable citizenry” with a volume of money far too vast for any one human to track. One person, however, has come pretty close. We spoke with longtime arms industry researcher William D. Hartung, coauthor of the new book, The Trillion Dollar War Machine, along with Ben Freeman, about what to be on the lookout for in this extraordinary year.

Inkstick: This year the military budget will, for the first time, be over $1 trillion in the United States. How does that compare to other moments in history when the United States actually had troops deployed in ground wars?

Who are we going to fight..... THE WORLD...

The first list is based on the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) fact sheet, which includes a list of the world's top 40 military spenders as of 2024, based on current market exchange rates.[1]

The second list is based on the 2025 edition of The Military Balance, published by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) using average market exchange rates.[2]

The cost to NATO would be massive in dollars...

This IISS report assesses the financial costs and defence industrial requirements for a European NATO to defend against a future Russian threat if the United States were to withdraw from NATO. It finds that directly replacing key parts of the US contribution would amount to approximately USD1 trillion.

We are a military empire by any name... Greater than the Mongols and the British Empires... @jgoodguy , @O' Be Joyful . @TomEvans , @Tom , @diane , @Wehrkraftzersetzer , @LJMYERS

Bacevich's analysis shows how militarism grew as "a marriage of militarism and utopian ideology, of unprecedented military might wed to a blind faith in the universality of American values. This mindset, Bacevich warns, invites endless war and the ever-deepening militarization of U.S. policy." His critique goes beyond simple anti-war sentiment to reveal how "the citizens of the United States have essentially forfeited any capacity to ask first-order questions about the fundamentals of national security policy."

The massive scale of the United States’ military presence abroad shows how deeply militarism has become part of U.S. foreign policy thinking. As Chalmers Johnson documented, "Our military deploys well over half a million soldiers, spies, technicians, teachers, dependents, and civilian contractors in other nations." This network accounts for "75 to 85 percent of the world's total overseas military bases—likely more than any other people, nation, or empire in history."

These costs escalate when considering the secondary effects: the need for larger military budgets to support and defend remote installations, the diplomatic efforts required to negotiate base agreements, and the security risks associated with maintaining military personnel in potentially hostile environments. Money spent on overseas bases and deployments could instead be used to repair America's crumbling domestic infrastructure, address educational shortfalls, or improve healthcare.

Why did Trump pick 1.5 trillion dollars? That is NATO's total expenditures for 2025...

2024 Total Spending: Total military expenditure by all NATO members reached approximately $1.506 trillion in 2024, which accounted for 55% of total global military spending.

2025 Projections: The overall defense spending across the alliance is projected to top $1.5 trillion for the year 2025.

China is preparing for war... Selling bond buying strategic assets... @jgoodguy , @O' Be Joyful

According to the data released on Thursday (16/12), China’s holdings of US Treasuries fell to US$688.7 billion in October 2025, down from US$700.5 billion in September 2025.

Chinese financial data provider Wind, as quoted by the South China Morning Post, explained that the October figure is the lowest since November 2008 and reflects a decline of more than 47% from its peak of around US$1.32 trillion in November 2013.

This guy argues that if America quit being the world's policeman, the world would be poorer and more fearful, and there would be war... in decades... @O' Be Joyful , @jgoodguy , @Tom , @TomEvans , @LJMYERS

He wants Pax America to last forever because it is cost-effective... but we have to be stable, and we are not anymore... The world once feared us, but knew we were rational and now we are irrational, so trust was broken... now it's everyone for themselves...

Lots to unpack. Empires keep the peace; that is the history of mankind. The present situation is unstable and that makes trade uncertain. However bad we seem, alternatives are in worst shape. China is having a economic collapse and a military purge all at once. We are in the result of screwing over the US workers for decades but should make it out battered but OK. No country is in better shape than the US. The current trade network is a result of the Cold War and fear of the USSR.

Disengagement begins.... @jgoodguy , @rittmeister , @O' Be Joyful , @Tom , @TomEvans

In February 2026, the United States announced it would transfer leadership of key NATO commands to European officers as part of a restructuring to foster a "European-led" alliance. The U.K. is taking over Joint Force Command Norfolk, while Italy is assuming command of Joint Force Command

Naples. This shift follows U.S. demands for greater European responsibility in defense.
Naples Command: The Allied Joint Force Command Naples (covering the southern flank) will pass from U.S. to Italian leadership.

Norfolk Command: The Joint Force Command Norfolk in Virginia (covering the Atlantic/northern flank) will be handed to the United Kingdom.
Netherlands (Brunssum) Command: While Naples and Norfolk were key U.S.-led posts being transferred, reports indicate that Joint Force Command Brunssum in the Netherlands will be led by Germany and Poland on a rotational basis.
Context: This move aims to increase European responsibility while the U.S. retains leadership of subordinate commands, such as Allied Air, Maritime, and Land commands.
