That's an interesting piece, Pat. Johnson's attorney general was on board with no reconstruction and allowing the states to do as they pleased - this policy was what gave the KKK confidence to persecute blacks - who fought back with determination. It's interesting that the news article, dated a year later is regarding KKK unhappiness with Grant's attorney general, Hoar, who was strongly anti-slavery and quite willing to protect blacks. This type of aggression, which included an assassination of a Tennessee senator, was what made people like Forrest back off the klan. Treading thin ice! Grant was not Johnson.

Still though by 1876 President Hayes was elected and the Republican Party threw African Americans under the bus. The KKK actually was a very sucessful terrorist group up until another President Johnson the grandson of a Confedrate Cavalry man was able to get J.Edger Hoover to initiate Conuntertelpro where twenty five percent of the KKK members were FBI informants.
Was the KKK the inspiration for modern day terrorist groups?

COINTELPRO?

... had been started in '56 - certainly not during lbj's tenure

all hits i get for conuntertelpro (just one) are on a history forum by a user calling himself leftyhunter :D
COINTELPRO was an FBI operation to infiltrate the Civil Rights and Black Power movements. It viewed Martin Luther King as one of the primary threats to United States national security.

Sometimes it's a little disappointing that blacks are still portrayed as having had little to do with gaining and keeping their own freedom. That's why this article and others like it need to be seen. There's a lot of unsung heroes in the Reconstruction era, brave people we'll never know about but who kept carving out the road to freedom.

I think we might need another thread for the Hayes administration and Reconstruction! The panic of 1873 dealt a heavy blow to black civil rights in the South, and the election was heavily disputed - but the Democrats won the House and dismantling began.

True but it was also used against the KKK. Hoover never liked the KKK and had publicly denounced them in books he had written. On the other hand Hoover didn't like black people either. Hoover hated King because among other reasons King committed adultery. Hoover also took bribes from the Mafia.
Hoover was an interesting fellow.

Hoover sure had a long, long impact on American law enforcement - from top to bottom. He's one of those historical figures who no matter what you think of them, they're never boring!

For the all-time best fight against the Klan, see Donald v United Klans Of America. Beulah Mae Donald now owns all the assets of the UKA.

Thanks for reminding us of that case! Everyone should read of it - liberty and justice for all requires the courage to stand up to evil. She had it and then some!
